Internships and research

As a student here at Macalester, it's so easy to get to so many internships. They're close by. We have a great transit system. It's not hard to do. If you're a student interested in internships, career exploration is a wonderful service they have. They have lots of counselors who are experienced in in a huge number of fields, whether it's like arts, or social sciences or natural sciences. There's always somebody who's able to support you, and who's able to work you through whatever stage you are. Whether you're trying to find what you're interested, or once you know what you're interested in-- trying to find something, or once you found something, trying to figure out how to get it. We really try to guide students and help them understand what some of the internship opportunities are that are out there. So sometimes people don't know-- they think I might be interested in marketing. I might be interested in advertising, finance, accounting, geography, data science, psychology. What are the opportunities? And so usually the first thing that we do is sit down and talk about what are some of the great opportunities that are out there. The Career Exploration Center has helped me with building my resume, doing mock interview practice, and all other sorts of things for finding internships both back at home, and in the Twin Cities. One of the internships that I was a part of here at Macalester is Wayside Recovery Center. A addiction recovery center that focuses on gender specific treatment for women and their families. My supervisors encouraged me to connect with other leaders within that organization, and do some informational interviewing that was really useful, and helping me figure out what I wanted to do. I think the great thing about being able to engage in those ways is that students are able to compare what they're doing in the classroom with what's happening outside of the classroom. The more internships you do while you're in school, the better you're able to understand for yourself. What do I like? Where do I want to be? What do I want to study from here on out? And it really strengthens your resume, and makes you a more attractive candidate.
