Getting internships as a first-year or second-year can be really competitive. So the resources that Mac has really helped that my most recent internship was to Magnus. Magnus is an innovation grant, and they pay us a stipend so that we can work for an early age Twin City Space startup.
I have many first-year friends from last year who were able to do internships their first semester and in the summer, and this allowed them to already have experience on their resume and develop these great relationships with Macalester alum as well.
Now, as a third-year, when I'm applying to jobs outside for bigger companies, I have something better to show and I have an edge up on other people.
One of the most fulfilling internships that I have had the opportunity to do during my time at Macalester was actually Macalester and faculty-led. It was the Chuck Greene Fellowship and it was a really collaborative experience in which at the end, we all worked with different community partners, as not just interns, but as consultants in a way that helped us bring in our own ideas while supporting the work that we're already doing.
I studied abroad in Jordan, in Amman, Jordan, and while I was there, I was able to have an internship. And so I worked at the Jesuit Refugee Service and I taught English. I also taught refugees how to make cheese so that they could have some sort of alternative source of income. And I found all of these experiences through Macalester.
